How it works
What happens when you paste text
- Your text is sent to our server over HTTPS and processed in memory. It is not stored, logged, or shared.
- We find citations in the form volume reporter page (for example, 347 U.S. 483), including pin cites, plus DOIs.
- Case citations are looked up in a copy of the CourtListener citation index. DOIs are looked up at Crossref, then OpenAlex.
- You get one row per citation. You can download the table as a CSV file.
What the results mean
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Found | Exists in database. A case with this volume, reporter, and page is in the index. Compare the case name, court, and year with your text. This does not mean the case is good law or supports your point. |
| Not found | Not found in database; verify by hand. The reporter is covered but nothing matches. This is a reason to check, not proof that the citation was invented. |
| Unverifiable | We cannot check this citation: the reporter is not covered, it is a Westlaw or Lexis number, a statute, rule, or law review, or it could not be read. |
| Verified | DOIs only: the DOI exists and its registered title matches the title next to it in your text. |
| Mismatch | DOIs only: the DOI exists but belongs to a different title. |
Coverage
Case data comes from the CourtListener bulk data published by Free Law Project, refreshed quarterly. Coverage is broad for federal courts and the regional reporters but incomplete for some state and unpublished opinions. Some state reporters are not covered at all; citations to them return Unverifiable rather than Not found.

Measured accuracy
Before launch we will run a benchmark of real citations and invented citations taken from published sanction orders, and publish the catch rate and the false-flag rate here.
